Most of the letters were written from Bath, England between 1790 and 1802 and deal with medical topics, although other current affairs are regularly mentioned and discussed. There are a few letters from 1809-1813 in which Fothergill writes from Philadelphia, where he had retired to. He left Philadelphia for England during the War of 1812.
